STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTION
Step 1: Make a Lye Solution
Begin by weighing out the water and lye into two separate containers. Slowly and carefully pour the sodium hydroxide into the water while stirring constantly. Continue stirring until the lye is completely dissolved, and then set the solution aside to cool. Initially, the solution will appear cloudy, but it will become clear as it cools.
Step 2: Prepare the Base Oils
Next, weigh out any solid oils and butters into a container and melt them. This can be done in the microwave or on low heat on a stove.
Step 3: Add Honey, buttermilk and Oatmeal
Once the oils are melted and warm, weigh out the honey and add it to the oils. This will help the honey melt and incorporate smoothly into the soap. It is important to add the honey to warm oils to prevent speckling, which is simply an aesthetic issue. At this point, you can also add the buttermilk and oatmeal to the mixture.
Step 4: Once the oils are melted, carefully weigh out each liquid oil and add it to the mixture. This will help to regulate the temperature and create a base oil mixture that is suitable for soap making. However, it is important to note that the mixture may still require some cooling before proceeding.
Step 5: Measure out your desired amount of essential oil or fragrance oil into a glass or stainless steel container and carefully add it to your base oil.
Step 6: Prepare your chosen mold. If necessary, line it with parchment paper or a silicone liner. For this recipe, I used soap loaf molds from Amazon, which added a fun touch to my soap.
Step 7: Check the temperatures of both your base oils and lye solution. Use an infrared temperature gun and be sure to stir each mixture before taking the temperature. Ideally, both should be between 90-130° F.
Step 8: After reaching the desired temperatures, carefully pour the lye solution into the oil mixture. Mix until the mixture reaches a light trace consistency. For a neat and uniform appearance, I recommend pouring the mixture into mold at this stage.
Step 9: Transfer the soap mixture into your chosen molds and allow it to set.
Step 10: Allow your soap to harden and saponify for a minimum of 24 hours. If the soap does not harden, it may require an additional day or two to fully harden before unmolding.
Step 11: Gently remove the soap from the mold, cut into the sizes you want and let it cure for 4-6 weeks. This will give the soap time to fully develop and become even more luxurious.
